Choose the right tempo November 22, 2011

Not surprising it took me about 4 days last week to figure out how to record Danger At Your Door. It’s far from being finished, but I recorded a nice beginning excerpt in order to get the overall feeling. Then I decided I should find a solid method before.

Was it too fast, too slow, or does it fit the right tempo ? So let’s work on that before for all of the songs. I play them a certain way with my acoustic guitar, but it changes when comes the moment I add drums and other elements.

I finally started to work on other songs, 6 at the moment, focusing on the right tempo and the first verse/chorus only. It’s of course faster than recording the whole songs, it helps find the good rythm, and the general ambiance. Some kind of pre production.

When I’m done with all the songs I can then listen to them again, have a better insight, consider all of those songs as a whole, change things a little bit and then I’ll record and arrange them properly…

A long process that has to be done…

I read a nice article about pre production you might like to read as well. Not that relevant for me as long as I record at home and don’t have to struggle against studio time, but the process is inspiring.
