So many days – no part II March 24, 2009

I finally finished the mix last sunday. I then decided to try out an online mastering service, which offers a free test. So let’s wait for that version, if it’s ok i’ll probably let everybody listen to it… songs are made to be heard, of course…

I decided i won’t write and record the part II i planned earlier. I actually think it should have been done as a whole project. Next time I’ll think about that concept… for another song.

So what’s next ? Not shure yet… many things to do, I just have now to decide which one i’ll perform, either writing new songs or recording another one… i’ll think about it for a few days then will act in one defined direction…

Talk to you soon ;o)

So many days – Part I March 19, 2009

Work on that song is still in progress… It was a good idea to plan a whole week for it, for i had to get into recording again, and test different options.

I spent a lot of time recording guitars, trying to find a good sound, then reconsidered it totally when i recorded the bass part. I felt it was far better to record drums then bass first, then the rest.

So now i have a drum track, a single note piano track running all along the song, a guitar track, a mellotron cello track, then a voice track. Maybe it’s stupid but i don’t feel comfortable with recording several tracks and cut and paste them in order to get some kind of perfect track. I prefer recording one track that sounds ok, in order to keep the same mood.

The voice track has to be done again, i don’t think it’s enough expressive… then i plan a solo violin mellotron track for the second part of the song. That’s all, 7 tracks.

I compared that rough version to a Tindersticks song, in order to know about what will have to be done for the mix. It’s quite encouraging…

The song is called “So many days – Part I”. Actually i had the idea to write a second part… Keeping the same drum rythm and tempo, but starting with some piano… The song structure will be simple, but everything has to be done… Anyway, not that bad to put some new and fresh ideas into something else… Two songs in one…

Talk to all about it soon…

Goals, holidays March 13, 2009

I don’t like sunny beaches that much. I prefer cold ones, under a rainy day, violent waves and strong wind. I’ve got a one week holidays, next week… cool… because i know exactly what i’m going to do. I’m going to wish everyday it’s going to rain, so i’ll have to stay at home looking at the falling water…

Not only, of course, I hope a melancholic mood in order to work on one song… a song called “so many days”. The structure and the melody are done, the lyrics almost complete. My goal is to record and mix it. Then use that empty player. After a family week-end, i know i will wake up early monday morning, with that one goal in mind.

So what’s left to do ? complete the lyrics, recording of a basic chord structure, programming of the drum beats, playing an electric guitar track, then the voice. if it’s cool, i’ll add the other elements : a piano track, two mellotron tracks, a second voice probably. Then i will have to mix it.

it’s quite weird to plan it like that, because i’ve been unable to record anything decent for about 4 years now. Maybe because i had no goals ? because i didn’t plan anything ?

In the morning March 10, 2009

It’s quite hard to find some time for music when you have a day job. You have to wake up early, jump into the train, spend the whole day on boring tasks, then go back home with one idea : sleep !

My own issue is to wake up earlier, at the moment. At 6.30 am, actually. I know some acts prefer working at night… I feel more comfortable in the morning, just after a good host of dreams.

So, waking up this early let me about half an hour everyday to work on something. It’s quite short for a large number of tasks, but not for all of them. And that’s cool, because for a couple of months it left me the feeling i clearly did something everyday.

I spent time on writing parts of lyrics, on working on song structures, on playing guitar and recording everything at the same time, so I now have about five hours rough material of ideas to listen to and sort. Good for avoiding writer’s block.

I just have now to keep on this kind of tasks, and wait for some holidays in order to have enough time to complete a few more songs. Next week ?
